Sales of Rosé are Through the Roof

The stereotype is definitely dead: Rosé wine is now seen as much more than a drink to be dusted off and served on a hot summer’s day. It’s so popular, in fact, that one in eight bottles of wine bought in supermarkets is now Rosé .

This is astonishing when one considers that, in 2000, this figure was only one in 40. Neilsen, the market analysts, have estimated that sales of Rosé in shops is currently worth £646 million in the UK, or around £1.8 million per day. Interestingly, it is now seen as much more of a lifestyle choice than something bought for a specific period of the year. Martin Green, from Off Licence News magazine, said: "At the turn of the century rose was the Austin Allegro of the wine world - cheap, unfashionable and something you would never want to bring to a dinner party. Quality has soared in line with demand as winemakers realise Rosé's potential for increasing profits and the importance of producing and marketing Rosé in its own right as opposed to regarding it as a byproduct of red wine. "If further proof of its status were needed, Hollywood A-listers are tapping into rose's new found chic. The 6,000 bottle release of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's first vintage from their Chateaux Miraval estate sold out within five hours - at about £88 per six-bottle case." So how can retailers capitalise on this trend? Research shows that women are far more likely than men to prefer Rosé , and that the purchase is based on the style of wine and not the brand. Retailers therefore have a genuine opportunity to present an interesting, high value selection of Rosé wines to customers, and to help them discover different Rosé styles. Flavour, not branding, will be the key here. Signature Wines is proud to import and distribute an outstanding Rosé from the Stobi Winery in Macedonia, which is already flying off shelves across the UK. Its advantages are not only a brilliant depth of fruity flavour, but also its great value thanks to the relative obscurity of Macedonian wines in this country.
